its actually supposed to be the total surface area The total area will increase.
That’s because each possible cut exposes two new flat (or possibly curvilinear***) areas that didn’t count before because they were not exposed to anyone’s view.

*** You didn’t specify that the cuts were planar! And by “total area” you presumably meant “total surface area?”
