Cut Solid

What happens to the total area when any solid polyhedron is cut into smaller pieces?
Could someone please explain what happens? oh and dumb it down
its actually supposed to be the total surface area

The total area will increase.

That’s because each possible cut exposes two new flat (or possibly curvilinear***) areas that didn’t count before because they were not exposed to anyone’s view.

Live long and prosper.

*** You didn’t specify that the cuts were planar! And by “total area” you presumably meant “total surface area?”
